Concentration Beginning Explanation
For my concentration I elected to do a mythical or fantasy esc theme. I genuinely enjoy make fiction so this is a topic I’ve been really motivated and excited to work on. Because of this, I’m taking a lot of time to work and devoting most of my free time to progressing my artwork. Some of my pieces may be based loosely on a pre-existing fantasy/mythical creature however a good amount will be creatures or topics drawn from my own imagination and mind. I find it more freeing and enjoyable when I’m making up my own topic since I can make the proportions as extreme and eye catching as I please. I’m using patterns to my advantage through these works by incorporating them into most areas of my art that I would like the attention drawn to. As for my materials I am working with watercolors, acrylics, and sometimes pen. I’m considering markers and experimental materials for certain projects though. All my pieces will be mixed media, unless I change my mind and choose to do one or two plain watercolor ones.
Project #1
For my first project I wanted to go all out and experiment with colors, my coloring style, proportions, and just the design of the character in general. I’d like to think this piece of art represents a trance like state where someone might not know where to go next and is stuck in one place confused. I don’t usually use the warmer colors with blue because I’m worried it’ll look too Detroit tigers ish but I’m actually I big fan of how this turned out. I used the patterns on the more red parts of the image to further bring the viewer’s eye to it. For the necklaces and jewelry I tried to stay light with the orange tones and add drastic contrast using the blue and yellow, I did the same with the eyes. The character is aligned to the left which leaves a nice negative space on the rest of the piece. The pattern in the background adds to th idea of being in a trance and is repetitive enough that it isn’t too distracting. Overall, I am satisfied with this first piece and I’m looking forward to my completing my next one.
